NEWS & NOTES
February 7, 2010
“LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER”: The Prayer Board (in the Annex hallway) is for everyone who knows of someone in need of special prayer. You are encouraged to bring your prayer requests to the church office. This week we commend to the Lord’s care Paula Elkins, Odie Meadows, Tamra Robinson, Kenneth Stubblefield, Byron Ommen, Nicholas French, David Monroe, Alvin Magelitz, Deby Morris, Terri Schneider, George Kording, Alice Kleinschmidt, Ray Leutz, Sonny Zimmer, Logan Nobis. |
Sunday School: Growing in Christ Sunday School Superintendent: Kevin Tavender
Today in Sunday School the Bible story is Jesus calling His first disciples (Luke 5:1–11). The children learned that Jesus chose ordinary, sinful men to follow Him and be His disciples. In Baptism, Jesus chooses us to be His children. Talk about how sin causes us to want to hide from Jesus and doubt that He is who He says He is. Underscore that in Jesus’ forgiveness we find peace and favor with God, whose Word testifies repeatedly and consistently that Jesus is God’s Son.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:We are reading through the Gospel of Luke aided by a PowerPoint projector presentation of hundreds of colored slides! Find out more about what the Word of God says of Jesus’ miraculous virgin birth, His ministry of preaching, teaching and healing, His crucifixion for the sins of the world and His amazing resurrection from the dead! Join us in the Fellowship Hall at 9:15 am.
ADULT BIBLE CLASS- We have completed our Sunday Bible Study of the Augsburg Confession. We are now beginning a study on “Trees” in the Bible. Wood is involved in many stories of faith and deliverance in Scripture. This study will be led by Mr. Busseau in the 7th & 8th grade classroom in the building on the west parking lot.
WEDDING -JASON BEALMEAR LAKAMP and JENNIFER LYNN NEWINGHAM were married in a 2:00 PM ceremony in our church sanctuary on Saturday, February 6, with the Reverend Bruce Lakamp, uncle of the groom, officiating. We pray God’s richest blessings on Jason and Jennifer as they begin their new life together in His name!

OUR PING PONG TABLE NEAR THE GYM HAS BEEN BROKEN! If you would like to donate your old table, please contact Pastor Brechbuhl.
MISSION OUTREACH - Luke 5:1-11: Jesus used the miracle of catching a huge number of fish to encourage His disciples to become “fishers of men.” As they spent more time with Jesus they became more effective “fishers of men.” By reading, studying and reflecting upon the powerful Word of God we grow in our effectiveness as God’s witnesses. Spending time with Jesus is just as important for us as it was for His first disciples.
LENTEN DEVOTIONAL BOOKLETS are located in the narthex. “From the Mount of Transfiguration to Mount Calvary” a Lenten Journey for 2010 is provided by Lutheran Hour Ministries. Pick up your copy from the bookshelves in the narthex.
MARKET DAY- Market Day order forms are available in the school and church office and the church narthex. Internet are to be placed at www.marketday.com. Questions? Call the school office (243-3419).
PASTOR VISITS TO YOUR HOME: Pastor would like to visit you in your home–just to talk, no agenda, no congregational program to push. You can also ask him about our congregational life together or about questions from the Bible. To schedule a visit with him in your home, please call the church office, 243-3419, or Pastor’s cell, 245-7116.
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT - 1 Corinthians 14:12b-20: As God’s redeemed stewards we are not all equipped for the same kinds of service, but we are all equipped in special ways to serve as God desires. This truth should be an incentive for us to discover and use our spiritual gifts in God-pleasing ways that benefit others as well as us.
THE SALEMJAX.ORG WEBSITE has new content and is updated frequently. There are blogs, devotional items, sermons and doctrinal writings. You can check out photos from our various church ministries. Consider making salemjax.org your home page or setting a book mark for it
SALEM CONNECTS would like to connect with our Congregation's Military personnel that are currently serving. If you have a family member or know of someone serving that you think would like to be blessed with a care package, please provide their name and mailing address to TRACY TAVENDER (217/220-3006 or ttavender5@gmail.com).
TIME TO COLLECT YOUR SOLES! Salem Connects and our Scott-Morgan Thrivent Chapter are teaming together to collect gently used shoes, any type, during January and February. The shoes will be delivered to Bloomington on February 27th to be presented to George "The Shoeman" Hutchings. To fund his Kenya clean water initiative, Pastor Hutchings collects used shoes and sells them to a local recycler. With the proceeds, he purchases water drilling equipment used to provide clean water in Kenyan. The shoes eventually end up in South America where people can buy them for pennies. Check out this amazing project at shoeman.org. Shoe drop off boxes are located in the church narthex and outside the annex church office area. Please secure your shoes with string or rubber bands. Thank you for your support as together we help bring clean water to God's people in Kenya. If you would like a Shoeman Project flyer to post at your work or in the community, contact DIANN BRECHBUHL.
FAMILY HANDBELLS next session will ring Sunday, February 14th. Practice will be held this Wednesday, February 10th. Contact DIANN BRECHBUHL today if you want to join in this session.

LIFE LINES Written by Jeanne Strubbe Life Ministry Coordinator Salem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville, IL
Many developed nations around the world have reached out to help the citizens of Haiti following the disastrous 7.0 scale earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, January 12. Right there among organizations reaching out to help the Haitians is International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). IPPF has launched a fundraising appeal in order to further their goals in this devastated pro-life nation. Within a day of the disaster, IPPF had sent out an appeal letter, seeking “urgent” support for their Haitian affiliate PROFAMIL.
IPPF, the world's largest abortion provider, claims that funds are needed in order to restore “basic medical services” at the PROFAMIL clinics. According to their letter, PROFAMIL has operated since 1984, providing “low-cost, quality sexual and reproductive healthcare.” Rita Diller, national director of Stop Planned Parenthood stated, “Planned Parenthood, true to form, is using the disaster and the suffering in Haiti to raise money to perpetuate itself in its ongoing attack on decency, morality, and the right to be born. While millions of people are suffering unbelievably and are without the most basic necessities, Planned Parenthood wants to grab the donations that should be going to provide medical care, food, clothing, and housing, and funnel it to its local affiliate that pushes condoms on children as young as 10 years old,” she continued. “Planned Parenthood has no shame. What would you expect of an organization that killed over 305,000 innocent pre-born children last year alone?” What strikes me as unconscionable regarding the actions of IPPF is the fact that they are seeking to add more death and despair through abortion in a nation that has already suffered thousands of deaths from the earthquake. IPPF continues to show its true colors as instruments of death. I ask that we all pray for the people of Haiti and also for the rescue and relief workers who are genuinely trying to help. James 4:17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.

New Sanctuary Open Forum with architect Elmer Wind
About 80 members attended an open forum on a master plan for a new sanctuary on the north-east corner of our campus. Architect Elmer Wind of St. Louis and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Foundation gave a PowerPoint projector presentation. An animation of a possible plan for the sanctuary along with color drawings was presented. Applause concluded this very informative meeting with the architect. No decision to build a new sanctuary has yet been made by Salem's Voters' Assembly.

Mortgage Burning
February 1, 2009
About 70 Salem members gathered to burn the mortgage on our Annex. The mortgage was about $1.0 million for a term of 25 years. By God's grace which motivated us to sacrificial giving, we paid off the mortgage in 15 years. In 1994 the total cost of the Annex and school enhancements was about $1.4 million. Salem is now debt and mortgage free!

He Is Risen!
Jesus Christ is alive forever. We have a risen and living Savior and Lord, who died and rose again for the sin of all people. May we live each day in the light of that Easter joy with sins forgiven and with Jesus in our lives as an ever present help in every trouble.

MARTIN LUTHER AND THE REFORMATION
On October 31, 1517 God moved Dr. Martin Luther (A. D. 1483-1546), an Augustinian monk and Doctor of Old Testament theology, to nail what has become known as the Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. These theses or sentences attacked the Roman Catholic practice and teaching of indulgences, which sold forgiveness for money. Pope Leo the 10th had issued an official proclamation, called an indulgence, which offered to sell the forgiveness of sins for both the living and dead, without the presence of sorrow over sin or faith in Christ. John Tetzel, a Dominican monk, became wealthy selling these indulgences, this forgiveness paperwork, in the area near Wittenberg, Germany where Luther lived. Tetzel was a large, eloquent man with a flare for sales psychology. His arrival was announced some weeks before his visit to a town. When he finally arrived, the whole town would come out to greet him with a great celebration. In the town square, Tetzel gave his first sermon on "Hell," in which he pictured the place of the damned in language made vivid with fire and brimstone. The second sermon which dramatically portrayed the sufferings of the relatives of the townspeople in "Purgatory" was spoken in the town cathedral. He would ask his audience, if they could not hear the wailing and suffering cries of their relatives rising up from purgatory, while they, their descendants, enjoyed their inheritance here on earth. Tetzel's third sermon was on the joys of "Heaven." How sweet and peaceful were the souls in heaven in contrast to the sufferings of the poor souls in hell! Now the audience was ripe for the sale of the indulgences. Tetzel sold the indulgence paperwork to the people based on their ability to pay. Businessmen would have to pay as much as $80, while the poor were charged only $7! After this selling of forgiveness had gone on for a few years, Martin Luther in righteous indignation posted his Ninety-five Theses against this indulgence traffic. While Luther posted these statements with the intention of sparking a scholarly dialogue within the Roman Catholic Church, God used this event to trigger the Lutheran Reformation, the fruits of which Protestant churches still enjoy, today. The Lutheran Reformation continues to be celebrated, because through this renewal of the church the Holy Spirit taught the church the biblical doctrine of justification by God’s grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ as Savior. Justification, this teaching of forgiveness through Christ alone, is the central doctrine of the Bible by which the church stands and continues to grow.
