Sunday School: Growing in Christ
“In the beginning . . .” Today our Sunday School begins its use of a new curriculum for Sunday Schools, Growing in Christ. It is fitting that we begin our study with God’s account of the beginning of all things, His creation of the universe and all that is in it (Genesis 1–2:2). Parents, during the week, point out to your children some of the wonderful things in our world that God made and praise Him for these creations in your family devotions as you Grow in Christ.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:We are reading through the Gospel of Luke aided by a PowerPoint projector presentation of hundreds of colored slides! Join us in the Fellowship Hall 9:15 am.
Today’s RADIO BROADCASTis sponsored by Janell Hammond in memory of her husband, Donald Hammond, in remembrance of the day he was called home to live eternally with Jesus 21 years ago on September 4.
Our ALTAR FLOWERS are given to the glory of God by John and Sherri on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary on September 8.

"HYMNAL IN EVERY HOME" CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES TO CELEBRATE THE SALE OF THE 1,000,000TH COPY OF LUTHERAN SERVICE BOOK: Since its release in August 2006, our pew hymnal, Lutheran Service Book, has been enthusiastically received, so much so that Concordia Publishing House is pleased to announce that the 1,000,000th copy of the Missouri Synod's hymnal has been sold. Over 80% of the congregations in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod are now using Lutheran Service Book and never before has a hymnal been so quickly and universally adopted by Missouri Synod congregations. As part of the original project plans, the LCMS Commission on Worship envisioned that Lutheran Service Book would not only be found in congregational pew racks, but in Lutheran homes, as an essential part of every Lutheran's devotional life. To help realize this goal, Concordia Publishing House is launching the "Hymnal in Every Home" campaign, and offering Lutheran Service Book at a special price of $20 for the pew edition and $30 for the gift edition. Learn more about the campaign by visiting cph.org/hymnal or contacting the church office.
PASTOR VISITS TO YOUR HOME:Pastor would like to visit you in your home–just to talk, no agenda, no congregational program to push. You can also ask him about our congregational life together or about questions from the Bible. To schedule a visit with him in your home, please call the church office, 243-3419, or Pastor’s cell, 245-7116.

To qualify for these funds a student must be a member of Salem and attending a Synodical university or college and submit an e-mail or letter to the church office by July 15 indicating their intent to become a full time church worker. The Salem Lutheran PTL has designated half of the proceeds from the Golf Tournament to help with classroom improvements also this year. Come join us for a fun afternoon of golfing and supporting the Roy Lovekamp Scholarship Fund and Salem School.
CHOIR AND HANDBELL CHOIR BEGINS - BRUCE ENGEBRECHT, church music director, has announced the beginning of the new season for the Adult Choir and Adult Handbell Choir. The choirs will practice each Thursday evening in the church balcony. New singers and ringers are always welcome. Come join either or both groups if you enjoy singing or ringing.

We've had moms, dads, grandmas, youth, empty nesters and lots of others ring with us so everyone fits in. Reading music is not necessary but having fun is! MISSION OUTREACH - Luke 14:25-35: In His teaching Jesus said that salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again. Jesus taught that we as His followers are like salt on earth to season and preserve good things. Witnessing to Jesus is the best way that we can be like salt!
VOLUNTEERS & SUPPORTERS NEEDED - In 2009-2010: one of seven ISD students attended Christ Lutheran Church of the Deaf in Jacksonville. But we can't do it without your help! We are looking for volunteers and supporters. On Mondays (7pm) we have a youth group of 10-20 students. On Wednesdays (3pm) we our elementary program serves 10-15 students. We need teachers, chaperones, cookie bakers, music leaders, snack servers, and activity leaders (indoor/outdoor, games, videogames, others?). Knowledge of sign language is helpful, but not necessary. Contact PASTOR TOM PHILLIPS (245-0180 or CHRISTDEAFLC@FRONTIER.COM).
STEWARDSHIP - Philemon 1-21: Since Philemon was indebted to Paul, he could have ordered him to do the right thing and treat his runaway slave like a brother, but Paul wanted Philemon to do the right thing from his own free will. Likewise, we are indebted to God for all the blessings He has showered upon us; God could demand that we give freely of our time, abilities and financial resources, but He loves cheerful givers!
LIFE LINES Submitted by Jeanne Strubbe Life Ministry Coordinator, Salem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville, IL
The following article is courtesy of Illinois Federation Right to Life.
On Wednesday, August 25, Thomas More Society attorneys filed a motion to immediately transfer the legal case pending against the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act from the Illinois Appellate Court to the Illinois Supreme Court. Arguing that pregnant minors at risk for abortion suffer harm every day that the Act is not enforced, the Society invoked the Supreme Court rule allowing transfer of an appeal when the "public interest requires prompt adjudication." The pending appeal, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is currently in the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, where a decision may not come for a year or more. Just Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 24, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who is constitutionally obligated to defend the Parental Notice Act, joined the ACLU in opposing speedy resolution of the case by the Supreme Court. Earlier, after the trial judge threw out the ACLU's case, the Attorney General agreed to an indefinite stay of the Parental Notice Act during the ACLU's current appeal. Thomas More Society wants to thank John-Paul Deddens, President of Students for Life of Illinois, who built the website www.letparentsknow.com, in order to support the Parental Notice Act. A coalition of pro-life and pro-family groups across Illinois have joined the website and the effort, and in response, thousands of Illinoisans called and petitioned the Attorney General over the past week to urge her to support the immediate resolution of the case by the Supreme Court. The fate of the motion now rests in the hands of the Illinois Supreme Court, where "the Supreme Court or a justice thereof may order that the appeal be taken directly to it." Proverbs 31:8-9 “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

New Sanctuary Open Forum with architect Elmer Wind
About 80 members attended an open forum on a master plan for a new sanctuary on the north-east corner of our campus. Architect Elmer Wind of St. Louis and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Foundation gave a PowerPoint projector presentation. An animation of a possible plan for the sanctuary along with color drawings was presented. Applause concluded this very informative meeting with the architect. No decision to build a new sanctuary has yet been made by Salem's Voters' Assembly.

Easter: He Is Risen!Reformation
He Is Risen!
Jesus Christ is alive forever. We have a risen and living Savior and Lord, who died and rose again for the sin of all people. May we live each day in the light of that Easter joy with sins forgiven and with Jesus in our lives as an ever present help in every trouble.

MARTIN LUTHER AND THE REFORMATION
On October 31, 1517 God moved Dr. Martin Luther (A. D. 1483-1546), an Augustinian monk and Doctor of Old Testament theology, to nail what has become known as the Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. These theses or sentences attacked the Roman Catholic practice and teaching of indulgences, which sold forgiveness for money. Pope Leo the 10th had issued an official proclamation, called an indulgence, which offered to sell the forgiveness of sins for both the living and dead, without the presence of sorrow over sin or faith in Christ. John Tetzel, a Dominican monk, became wealthy selling these indulgences, this forgiveness paperwork, in the area near Wittenberg, Germany where Luther lived. Tetzel was a large, eloquent man with a flare for sales psychology. His arrival was announced some weeks before his visit to a town. When he finally arrived, the whole town would come out to greet him with a great celebration. In the town square, Tetzel gave his first sermon on "Hell," in which he pictured the place of the damned in language made vivid with fire and brimstone. The second sermon which dramatically portrayed the sufferings of the relatives of the townspeople in "Purgatory" was spoken in the town cathedral. He would ask his audience, if they could not hear the wailing and suffering cries of their relatives rising up from purgatory, while they, their descendants, enjoyed their inheritance here on earth. Tetzel's third sermon was on the joys of "Heaven." How sweet and peaceful were the souls in heaven in contrast to the sufferings of the poor souls in hell! Now the audience was ripe for the sale of the indulgences. Tetzel sold the indulgence paperwork to the people based on their ability to pay. Businessmen would have to pay as much as $80, while the poor were charged only $7! After this selling of forgiveness had gone on for a few years, Martin Luther in righteous indignation posted his Ninety-five Theses against this indulgence traffic. While Luther posted these statements with the intention of sparking a scholarly dialogue within the Roman Catholic Church, God used this event to trigger the Lutheran Reformation, the fruits of which Protestant churches still enjoy, today. The Lutheran Reformation continues to be celebrated, because through this renewal of the church the Holy Spirit taught the church the biblical doctrine of justification by God’s grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ as Savior. Justification, this teaching of forgiveness through Christ alone, is the central doctrine of the Bible by which the church stands and continues to grow.

Mortgage Burning
February 1, 2009
About 70 Salem members gathered to burn the mortgage on our Annex. The mortgage was about $1.0 million for a term of 25 years. By God's grace which motivated us to sacrificial giving, we paid off the mortgage in 15 years. In 1994 the total cost of the Annex and school enhancements was about $1.4 million. Salem is now debt and mortgage free!
