New Sanctuary Open Forum with architect Elmer Wind
About 80 members attended an open forum on a master plan for a new sanctuary on the north-east corner of our campus. Architect Elmer Wind of St. Louis and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Foundation gave a PowerPoint projector presentation. An animation of a possible plan for the sanctuary along with color drawings was presented. Applause concluded this very informative meeting with the architect. No decision to build a new sanctuary has yet been made by Salem's Voters' Assembly.

Sunday School: Growing in Christ
Sunday School Superintendent: Kevin Tavender
This week, Sunday School students studied “Workers Build the Temple.” The temple was a magnificent structure that symbolized God’s even more magnificent dwelling with His people: Christ Jesus. Families could discuss, “What kinds of special workers helped build the temple? What kinds of workers help build churches and other buildings today?”
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: THE NEW TESTAMENT BOOK OF HEBREWS: We are reading through Hebrews, whose theme is that the Old Covenant has been fulfilled by the New Covenant established by Christ’s blood shed on Calvary. Some of the topics addressed by Hebrews are:
+the divine and human natures of Christ
+the place of angels
+the saving faith of the Old Testament believers
+the atoning work of Christ
+the fulfillment of the Old Covenant by the New Covenant
+the faithfulness of God in all His promises

GENERAL NOTES AND UPCOMING EVENTS
MISSION OUTREACH - Mark 6:1-13: Jesus sent the Twelve disciples two by two with the authority to cast out demons, heal the sick and preach that people should repent. We are blessed to be Ablaze! disciples who follow our Lord’s Great Commission to go wherever we can and speak boldly of the good news of Jesus.
NEW ORGAN FUND - Salem Voter’s Assembly approved the purchase of a new organ for our sanctuary at the cost of about $72,000 when all funds have been collected to purchase the organ. To date a total of $61,288 has been received toward the $72.000 goal. Please consider giving to this fund. Make out your check to: Salem Lutheran Church and indicate on the check for the NEW ORGAN.
THE SALEMJAX.ORG WEBSITE has new content and is updated frequently. There are blogs, devotional items, sermons and doctrinal writings. You can check out photos from our various church ministries. LIFE LINES
Written by Jeanne Strubbe
Life Ministry Coordinator
Salem Lutheran, Jacksonville
Yesterday our nation celebrated its 233rd birthday of freedom. But nearly fifty million American citizens have been denied the most basic of our freedoms, the right to life. Science has proven beyond a doubt that the embryo is a developing human. Embryologists can show us that within just a few weeks the embryo has developed recognizable features, including his or her face, arms and legs. Pope John Paul II stated, “from the time that the ovum is fertilized, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It would never be made human if it were not human already. This has always been clear, and ... modern genetic science offers clear confirmation.”
It has demonstrated that from the first instant of fertilization, this new person is a
unique individual with his/her characteristic aspects already well determined. Right from fertilization the adventure of a human life begins, and each of its capacities requires time to develop.
The opposition to the abomination of abortion is more than a partisan political position. For the Christian, this belief goes to the heart of the mystery that Christ came into this world to reveal to us. This mystery is reflected in our country’s founding document, which speaks of our being endowed by our Creator with rights that no one can take away from us or pretend that we don’t have — the first of these being the right to life.
Abortion is not only a Christian issue or a “matter of faith.” It concerns the most fundamental questions in any human civilization: Who gets to live and who doesn’t — and who gets to decide this question? Can one’s rights or freedoms include the right and freedom to extinguish the life of one who is weaker?
America has reached a tipping point in the battle for the sanctity of human life. Will Christians step forward and boldly demand that the killing of innocent human life must end. Or will the killing continue and expand even further under the Obama administration? It’s up to You! Life is a gift of God. It should be cherished. It should be nourished. It should be protected.
Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done? (Proverbs 24:11-12).

OPEN FORUM (No vote will be taken) FOR A DISCUSSION OF A POSSIBLE MERGER
BETWEEN SALEM AND OUR REDEEMER,
SUNDAY, JUNE 14TH, 1:30 PM, SANCTUARY
On March 29th Salem had an open forum with Architect Elmer Wind in which a presentation was made on what a new sanctuary would look like on the northeast corner of our campus. The question keeps getting asked, “what about a merger with Our Redeemer, instead?” The thought is that Salem might be able to save a lot of money by merging with Our Redeemer instead of building a new sanctuary. In response, Salem Elders appointed a task force to discuss a merger. Two meetings have been held in May between the pastors and leaders of both congregations discussing the pros and cons of such a merger. Salem members are invited to meet with Pastor Brechbuhl and the Elders in an Open Forum (in which no decision will be made) SUNDAY, JUNE 14TH, 1:30 PM, SANCTUARY to: 1. explain the results of the merger meetings 2. hear our members’ comments, concerns and hopes. No vote will be taken at this Open Forum.

An average of 74 children attended each day, preschool through 6th grade. This compares to the 2008 average of 49. We thank God for the 43 volunteers who worked so tirelessly on the VBS, Here is a link to our new VBS Photo Gallery: Click here Some of the photos are shown below:

Mortgage Burning
February 1, 2009
About 70 Salem members gathered to burn the mortgage on our Annex. The mortgage was about $1.0 million for a term of 25 years. By God's grace which motivated us to sacrificial giving, we paid off the mortgage in 15 years. In 1994 the total cost of the Annex and school enhancements was about $1.4 million. Salem is now debt and mortgage free!

Easter: He Is Risen!ReformationFamily Fun DayVolleyball
He Is Risen!
Jesus Christ is alive forever. We have a risen and living Savior and Lord, who died and rose again for the sin of all people. May we live each day in the light of that Easter joy with sins forgiven and with Jesus in our lives as an ever present help in every trouble.

MARTIN LUTHER AND THE REFORMATION
On October 31, 1517 God moved Dr. Martin Luther (A. D. 1483-1546), an Augustinian monk and Doctor of Old Testament theology, to nail what has become known as the Ninety-five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. These theses or sentences attacked the Roman Catholic practice and teaching of indulgences, which sold forgiveness for money. Pope Leo the 10th had issued an official proclamation, called an indulgence, which offered to sell the forgiveness of sins for both the living and dead, without the presence of sorrow over sin or faith in Christ. John Tetzel, a Dominican monk, became wealthy selling these indulgences, this forgiveness paperwork, in the area near Wittenberg, Germany where Luther lived. Tetzel was a large, eloquent man with a flare for sales psychology. His arrival was announced some weeks before his visit to a town. When he finally arrived, the whole town would come out to greet him with a great celebration. In the town square, Tetzel gave his first sermon on "Hell," in which he pictured the place of the damned in language made vivid with fire and brimstone. The second sermon which dramatically portrayed the sufferings of the relatives of the townspeople in "Purgatory" was spoken in the town cathedral. He would ask his audience, if they could not hear the wailing and suffering cries of their relatives rising up from purgatory, while they, their descendants, enjoyed their inheritance here on earth. Tetzel's third sermon was on the joys of "Heaven." How sweet and peaceful were the souls in heaven in contrast to the sufferings of the poor souls in hell! Now the audience was ripe for the sale of the indulgences. Tetzel sold the indulgence paperwork to the people based on their ability to pay. Businessmen would have to pay as much as $80, while the poor were charged only $7! After this selling of forgiveness had gone on for a few years, Martin Luther in righteous indignation posted his Ninety-five Theses against this indulgence traffic. While Luther posted these statements with the intention of sparking a scholarly dialogue within the Roman Catholic Church, God used this event to trigger the Lutheran Reformation, the fruits of which Protestant churches still enjoy, today. The Lutheran Reformation continues to be celebrated, because through this renewal of the church the Holy Spirit taught the church the biblical doctrine of justification by God’s grace through faith alone in Jesus Christ as Savior. Justification, this teaching of forgiveness through Christ alone, is the central doctrine of the Bible by which the church stands and continues to grow.
