The Life-Giving Word of God
A few days ago, the grass in my front lawn looked dry and brown. I panicked, because the worst looking patch was some sod I had put down two months ago. I resolved to water the lawn that evening. Didn’t want to lose my investment in the rolls of sod!
While I was gone for a few hours, a summer thunderstorm hit and poured sheets of rain on my dying grass. The next day the grass was green and thriving. The Word of God as it comes to our souls is life-giving like a summer rain on parched and dying grass. God uses this imagery through the prophet Isaiah: "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. 12 You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace!” (55:10-12) God’s Word is powerful and effective. It is life-giving like rain on dry grass. For the Bible convicts us of our sin and, much more, convinces us of the forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ. It is the power of God for life and salvation! (Romans 1:16) But if you do not put yourself in a position to hear the Word of God, you cannot receive it’s life-giving power. Don’t let summer excuses keep you from worship. Come and hear the Word of God and receive its life-giving power through faith in Jesus Christ! Pastor Brechbuhl
