Sunday School: Growing in Christ
Sunday School Superintendent: Kevin Tavender
Today’s Sunday School lesson studies “The Boy Jesus in the Temple.” Jesus is always about His Father’s business—and that business is always earning our salvation! No thing and no one can stand in His way. Consider asking, “How does Jesus show that He is about His Father’s business even at a young age? What is the most important part of His Father’s business?”

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS STUDIES THE BOOK OF EXODUS: Pastor teaches this faith-building account of God’s grace in the Old Testament in bringing Israel out of slavery in Egypt to the promised land. This foreshadows God’s grace in Christ in bringing us from being slaves of sin to forgiven children of God with a heavenly inheritance.

Our RADIO BROADCAST is sponsored by Bill and Correne Davidsmeyer in thankfulness that Salem was able to liquidate the 25 year Annex mortgage in 13 years and in gratefulness for the many blessings Salem has received from God this past year and in the year to come.
Our RADIO BROADCAST is also sponsored by Marjorie Lindsey in memory of her mother, Florence German, son, Richard Lindsey, and father, William German in remembrance of their deaths on January 4, 1961, January 7, 1993, and January 20, 1966 respectively.

CHRISTCARE
Are you interested in getting to know other couples at Salem Church/School in a less formal environment and joining a Bible Study that focuses on issues related to relationships, careers, etc.? Then the ChristCare Couples group may be what you are looking for. The Couples group will be starting in January and we hope you will join us. Our first get together will be held on Sunday, January 11 from 4 to 5 p.m. and will be held in the Church Basement. This time would be especially good for parents of Public Confirmation Class students. We will be setting the schedule for the upcoming months and making decisions on meeting dates/times then. Please consider joining our group and check out what ChristCare is all about. If you have any questions, please contact either Kevin & Tracy Tavender at 673-3771 or the Church Office.

FRIDAY AM BIBLE BREAKFAST Join us on Fridays at 6:45 AM in the Conference Room. We have just started the New Testament Letter to the Colossians. Colossians focuses on Jesus, true God and Creator of all, the Son of the heavenly Father, Christ who is more than sufficient to meet all our needs! Please join us and bring a friend!

THE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER is available each week in the narthex.

NEW ORGAN FUND - Salem Voter’s Assembly approved the purchase of a new organ for our sanctuary at the cost of about $72,000 when all funds have been collected to purchase the organ. To date a total of $38,133 has been received toward the $72.000 goal. Please consider giving to this fund. Make out your check to: Salem Lutheran Church and indicate on the check for the NEW ORGAN.

MISSION OUTREACH - Matthew 2:1-12: The wise men were ablaze when they saw God’s star in the sky and traveled a long distance to see for themselves what God had done to save His people. We can also be ablaze and shine like stars (Philippians 2:15) to point to Jesus, the true Light of the world.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT - Ephesians 3:1-12: Paul was a good steward of the Gospel of Jesus Christ especially to the Gentiles who were normally considered outsiders by the Jews. Like Paul we have been given the privilege and responsibility of sharing the good news of Jesus with people who are perishing without it. We are stewards of the good news!

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (A followup explanation from Kevin Tavender, Sunday School superintendent, from last Sunday’s childrens message)
There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won’t come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? Today I found out, thanks to the Internet.
From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.
The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stood for faith, hope, and love. The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament. The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership. And Mercy. The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments. The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples. The twelve drummers symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.
So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish.

WHEELCHAIR NEEDED - A member of the congregation is in need of a manual wheelchair, either for sale or rent. Call the church office (243-3419) if you have one available or know about the availability of one.

Life Lines
Written by Jeanne Strubbe
Life Ministry Coordinator, Salem Lutheran
On this my first article of 2009, I would like to comment on the great Christmas gift that unborn children and pro-lifer believers received from our current pro-life president, George Bush. President Bush gave the final approval to regulations that will help doctors, healthcare workers and medical centers that had previously been pressured to perform abortions or refer for abortions. The far-reaching regulation cuts off federal funding for any state or local government, hospital, health plan, clinic or other entity that does not accommodate doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other employees who refuse to participate in care they find ethically, morally or religiously objectionable. Conservative groups, abortion opponents and others sought the measure to safeguard workers from being fired, disciplined or penalized in other ways. The "right of conscience" rule could become one of the first contentious tests for the Obama administration, which could seek to reverse the rule either by initiating a lengthy new rulemaking process or by supporting legislation already pending in Congress. This action by President Bush has set off a fire storm of criticism by those who are pro-death for the unborn. Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, (the largest abortion provider in America) claimed “stopping forced abortions is ‘limiting the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate reproductive health information when they visit a federally funded health care provider.” Richards has also stated “anti-choice medical staff can withhold information about abortion, birth control, and sex education from their parents.” What Richards fails to make clear is the fact that the new ruling has nothing to do with birth control and despite that fact the birth control portions of the proposal were removed in August. What has Richards most upset is the new hoops that Planned Parenthood will be expected to jump through regarding the way they conduct their killing of humans business. Facilities that receive federal funding, including Planned Parenthood, will be required to certify that they will not refuse to hire nurses and other healthcare providers who object to abortion on moral grounds. The result of the new ruling remains to be seen as Richards has expressed her unwillingness to hire anyone who is opposed to abortion (or killing the unborn). Richards is already gearing up for a big fight to overturn the new Bush ruling, but it will require more than the flourish of an ink pen from Obama to do it. The "right of conscience" rule could very easily become one of the first tests for the new Obama administration. Obama could seek to reverse the rule either by initiating a lengthy new rulemaking process or by supporting legislation already pending in Congress. Opposing the Bush rule are 28 senators, more than 110 House members and more than a dozen state attorneys general, along with medical organizations including the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Hospital Association. The rule is supported by such groups as Concerned Women for America and the Catholic Health Association, which represents Catholic hospitals. "We urge the incoming Congress and administration to honor this much-needed implementation of long-standing laws," said Deirdre A. McQuade of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. "Individuals and institutions committed to healing should not be required to take the very human life that they are dedicated to protecting." With both houses of congress and the incoming president believing that killing the unborn is just dandy, the upcoming battle is something that we must keep in our prayers. Romans 16:17-18. I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
