GENERAL NOTES
FRIENDS OF JESUS & MUSLIM CONFERENCE REPORT - Today, Sunday, May 4, during the adult Bible Class, JONE SCHUMACHER is sharing the awesome mountain-top-experience she and her daughter, MELISSA, had by attending the Friends of Jesus and Muslims Conference in Detroit, MI in April. This was a gathering of pastors, our LCMS president, missionaries from around the world, professors, and laity all zealous to learn more about the very difficult task of sharing the love of God with Muslims. LCMS World Missions and People of the Book Lutheran Outreach (POBLO) partnered in this first-of-its-kind event to raise the level of preparation for sharing the love of Jesus for Muslim friends and neighbors in our community. Come hear some high points of what Jone learned and learn special insight she gained that may be helpful in our walk with God here at Salem.

Examine the historical, archaeological, and cultural proofs for Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Also know the answers to other beliefs held by atheists and others. Learn why the resurrection is central for Christians. Discover the evidence that has convinced critics over the years. For instance, did you know that 39 ancient sources (aside from the New Testament), such as Pliny, Josephus, and the Talmud, refer to the life of Christ, his teachings, crucifixion, and/or resurrection? More than 120 Powerpoint slides are used along with frequent reference to the Bible.

OUTREACH THOUGHT - John 17:1-11: When the disciples were fully convinced that Jesus was regularly praying to the Father for protection in their spiritual lives, they gained a boldness that no one could take away. What good news to know that Jesus is still at the right hand of the Father praying for us. This assurance moves us to be bold and ablaze in sharing this news of life with others who do not currently share our faith.

LIFE LINES Written by Jeanne Strubbe Life Ministry Coordinator, Salem Lutheran Her name was Dorothy Dixon and she died on January 31, 2008 in Alton, IL. Few will remember Ms. Dixon in the years to come. She didn’t write a best selling novel, nor win a political office. She wasn’t a famous actress, nor was she a scientist. She was just an ordinary person, pregnant, and trying her best to keep a roof over her head and that of her 1 year old son. What is newsworthy about this woman’s life was actually her death. She was a prisoner in her own home, locked up most of the time in a dark, cold basement with little to eat and no clothing to keep her warm. Her tormentors were led by a 35 year old woman and five accomplices ranging in age from 43 to 12. Ms. Dixon’s monthly income was pocketed by the six tormentors, giving little of it to Ms. Dixon. Instead, the six tormentors used Ms. Dixon for target practice with a BB gun which led to over 30 BB’s being lodged in her body upon her death. Her pitiful pregnant body was beaten, tortured, forced to run naked inside the house, scalded with hot liquids and starved. After reading this story I asked myself how God could allow this to happen? I searched His Word and found that evil entered that house in the form of six people who went about the work of Satan. They had free will and chose to perform heinous acts upon another human who they saw as having an unworthy life. Sin is the choice of man, not God. I feel compassion for all of the suffering that this woman endured prior to her death, and the death of her unborn child. I pray God took her home to be with him and put an end to her suffering. But we must also look to the tormentors in this case. I felt disgust when I read the news story about Ms. Dixon’s torturous death and I wanted the tormentors to pay. Genesis 9:6. "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.” But, I also feel that we must pray for the souls of these lost people that they not only pay for their sins, but that they come to faith in Jesus. John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The sad story of Ms. Dixon’s death is only one example of what happens hundreds of times per day in our nation. Why? Because too many have chosen to view life, especially human life, as being unworthy and dispensable.

Financial Peace University Debt is all around us. More than 70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Over 35% of Christian marriages end in divorce, and money problems are the number one cause. Financial Peace University has a long history of helping families successfully confront these problems head on. The program is a biblically-based accountability curriculum that teaches you to manage God's money and resources in a godly way. It empowers you to make the right financial decisions to achieve your financial goals, teaching you to eliminate debt, build wealth, and give like never before. On average, families reduce their debt by $5,300 and save $2,700 in just 91 days. God has given us over 800 scriptures about money, showing us how to handle our finances His way. The Bible has a lot of interesting things to say about money, debt, and personal finance. Here are a few verses you can find in the Scripture on the subject. These videos will help you learn more about Financial Peace University. See how the program changes lives and imagine the difference it can make in your church and community as people learn how to handle money God's way. The curriculum includes: * A 13-week video series designed to teach families to eliminate debt and build wealth, led by financial expert Dave Ramsey * Small-group discussions for accountability and discipleship: Topics covering saving, cash flow planning, dumping debt, investing, insurance, real estate, giving, and MUCH more! This program will be offered at Salem this summer, lead by one of our members and pastors. The cost is $93 per family which includes access to the Financial Peace University website. Please contact the church office to reserve your position and make your payment. Any questions should be directed to Pastor Brechbuhl.
