Sunday School: Growing in Christ
Sunday School Superintendent: Kevin Tavender K-8 SUNDAY SCHOOL MEETS IN THE LOWER LEVEL OF THE CHURCH. Today in Sunday School, students studied “Journey with a Runaway” from Philemon. Discuss some of Paul’s Letter to Philemon. Parents might ask, “How might you react to this Letter from Paul? How does forgiveness in Christ free us from slavery?”
Our ALTAR FLOWERS are given to the glory of God: Keith and Karole Devlin on the occasion of the 15th wedding anniversary on August 28, 2008.
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS STUDIES THE BOOK OF EXODUS: Pastor teaches this faith-building account of God’s grace in the Old Testament in bringing Israel out of slavery in Egypt to the promised land. This foreshadows God’s grace in Christ in bringing us from being slaves of sin to forgiven children of God with a heavenly inheritance.

THE BEST KIND OF GOLF Golf at its best includes three things. One, the game itself. Two, playing the game with Christian friends. Three, playing the game for a good cause. The ROY LOVEKAMP GOLF SCRAMBLE, scheduled for Sunday, September 21st, offers the best of golf. It is called a four man scramble. But you don’t have to be a four man or woman team to enter. Individuals or couples will be placed on teams of four. Skill is not required. But if you have ever played golf previously, we need to know your average score so that the teams are as even as possible. The cost is $50.00 per person, which includes 18 holes with cart, snacks during play, a bucket of warm up balls, and prizes. Registration forms are in the church narthex and annex.
MISSION OUTREACH - Matthew 16:13-20: When Jesus asked his disciples “who do you say that I am,” Peter answered for them all by saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Who do we say Jesus is? Our answer is our witness to others that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of the world. That is good news worth repeating!

Life Lines for Sunday, August 24 Written by Jeanne Strubbe Life Ministry Coordinator, Salem Lutheran Church In July of this year, me, my husband and three of his siblings went on a once in a lifetime trip to Alaska. Now a trip like that in and of itself is not so unusual in today’s world. However, we all drove together in our van over 10,000 miles roundtrip. We traveled through Canada on the Alaskan Highway to reach our destination. We marveled at the beauty that God created all along the way. We also learned so much more about our country and Canada. One thing that I learned from our trip that was never taught to me through a history class in high school was an event that happened during World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order on Feb. 19, 1942, which gave the United States military authorization to exclude individuals from areas vital to national security. Because of the strategic location of the Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific Ocean, the U.S. government feared the islands would be a target for the Japanese military, thus the order was used almost exclusively to remove Japanese Americans from the West Coast and Alaska. Nationally, more than 120,000 Japanese Americans from Alaska, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington were ordered into camps despite the fact that no terrorist incidents had ever been perpetrated by Japanese Americans. Alaska’s Aluets were also destined for evacuation during the war through no fault of their own. Those who were relocated suffered countless hardships from lack of food, drinking water and proper shelter and many never returned to their homes at the end of the war. Most endured in inadequate camps for over three years and many died during this time. One person was quoted as saying, “The pain of mistreatment of American citizens at the hand of their own trusted government is still carried by Aleuts and Japanese Americans.” One of the legacies of internment is the hope that it will never happen again. So, what does this have to do with life? I think it’s another example of how our own government can place so little value on human life. Abortion on demand places no value on the tiny human growing in the womb. Or, when patients are denied the simple basic needs of food and hydration in order to hasten their death. Jack Yamaguchi said in 1989, “For those of us who were forced to live there during those dark days of World War II, there are bitter memories, but for those of you who have never lived behind barbed wire under the watchful eyes of sentries armed with machine guns, may it serve as a reminder that the American ideals of brotherhood with liberty and justice for all are in continual peril if any American fails to stand up for the ideals that were set forth in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution of the United States.” How many of you are ready to stand up and say stop the killing of the innocents? Are you willing to publicly and loudly proclaim that our God is a God of Life for all humans? Hebrews 10:39. We don’t belong with those who turn back and are destroyed. Instead we belong with those who have faith and are saved. WORSHIP HELPERS
